Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 large apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Topping:

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • ✅ Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • ✅ In a medium bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  • ✅ In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • ✅ Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • ✅ Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, and mix until combined.
  • ✅ Fold in the sliced apples.
  • ✅ Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top evenly.
  • ✅ In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon for the topping. Sprinkle evenly over the cake batter.
  • ✅ Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • ✅ Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.
  • For a crispier top, broil for 1–2 minutes after baking (watch carefully!).
  • You can also use pears or a mix of apples and pears for a twist on the classic recipe.
